After 10 years of delivering the now famous – Liverpool International Tennis Tournament, Northern Vision and Liverpool City Council are working in partnership to hone the skills of stars of the future.
A tennis outreach programme, managed and run by Northern Vision, will start later this month with the aim of promoting the sport every day across the region, working in parks, leisure centres and in private clubs to develop and enhance existing tennis programmes, as well as set-up new initiatives, working with clubs to get the very best out of players.
And it doesn’t end when the tennis season closes. Young people will be encouraged to continue to develop their skills during the winter and head to Wavertree Tennis Centre to make the most of the top-class facilities.
Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Joe Anderson, said: “Despite the tough economic times we’re facing we’re committed to doing everything we can to develop sporting excellence in our city.
“Liverpool has a reputation for sporting prowess and it’s important the city council works closely with the private sector to make sure we can continue to aim high and bring accolades and medals back to the city.
“Liverpool’s International Tennis Tournament is a huge success story and I’m delighted we can continue working with Northern Vision in this new venture which will hopefully result in some home grown stars taking the title at Wimbledon!”
Northern Vision Founder Anders Borg, said: “My aim when I started Northern Vision and The Liverpool International Tennis Tournament was to make tennis accessible to all and to develop grass root tennis programmes across the City.
“The Council have been incredibly supportive over the years and I hope us working with them on this level will show our support to them and benefit the city.”
Northern Vision has introduced over 50,000 children to tennis since its tournament started in Liverpool in 2002. It gave a platform to local tennis talent including Liverpool born and Davis Cup team member, Ken Skupski.
The programme will launch next week and a seminar will be delivered at Calderstones Park on June 15th for all clubs signed up to the programme, who will all receive a visit during the week of the tournament from one of the players at the event.
