Wildcard Jodie Anna Burrage and Constant De La Basseriere from France won the inaugural Aegon Junior International at Wavertree Tennis centre , the first ever ITF event to be staged in Liverpool. Miss Burrage of Bournemouth beat Elena Antonova of St Petersburg, Russia 6-3 2-6 6-4. Jodie is only 14 years old and this was her first ever win on the ITF circuit . Mr De La Basseriere ranked number one in his age group in France beat Daniel Little of Bath 6-4 5-7 6-4 .
More than 550 players from 43 different nations applied to compete in Liverpool which was one of the highest uptake ever on a grade 5 event. Tournament director Anders Borg said ” We are so pleased that we were able to stage this event in Liverpool a city not normally associated with tennis. Having seen the talent on show all week l think British Junior tennis is in a very healthy state and our girls single winner Miss Burrage certainly has a very bright future ahead of her.”
